Thirsties Product Reviews

Here you will find in-depth reviews of Thirsties products, including how-to guides, fit guides and care instructions.

Thirsties Animalia

Caregivers have all different priorities when it comes to choosing a cloth diaper system. For some families, the most budget friendly option, like the Thirsties Duo Wrap, is going to be the best fit. Other caregivers may need a diaper that’s highly customizable like the Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper. Some families need a combination of styles that will work for different environments, depending on whether baby is at home, day care or with friends.

Mostly commonly, we are asked ‘But which cloth diapering system is the easiest?

First let me say, cloth diapering itself is much easier than people believe it to be. Preconceived notions, misinformation or the selection of a diaper system that doesn’t quite match the lifestyle of that particular family can leave some feeling like there is something inherently difficult about using cloth diapers. However, the Thirsties One Size All In One (OS AIO) wins the award for the easiest cloth diapering system by a long shot. Let’s look at the one step design, fit recommendations and fiber facts about the Thirsties OS AIO.

One Step Design

So, what does a ‘one step design’ mean?

The one step design means that the OS AIO functions and goes on almost exactly the same as a disposable diaper. The difference between the two would be that you are going to wash your Thirsties cloth diaper instead of throw it away in a landfill. See? Easy.

Each One Size All In One is one change for baby. The cloth diaper itself doesn’t require any parts or pieces. There is nothing to snap in or add and each time the diaper is dirty, you’ll need an entirely new one. Because the entire diaper is one ready to use piece, the closest in concept to a disposable diaper and goes into your cloth diaper laundry as is without any unstuffing or unsnapping, it is by far the most simple cloth diaper system on the market. The One Size All In One is also the easiest to use for any caregiver, making it the most requested by day cares and alternate care providers.

#ThirstiesTip If your day care or care provider is initially resistant to cloth diapering, try actually bringing your child and cloth diapers in to demonstrate how simple each change really is. More often than not, resistance to the idea of cloth diapering comes from misconceptions due to a lack of education. You might be surprised how many minds you can change just by demonstrating a OS AIO!

Fit Recommendations

Not only is the OS AIO a one-step change, but the One Size All In One can fit babies from birth through potty training. Because the One Size All In One is recommended for babies eight to forty pounds, you can get a great fit easily at all stages of your cloth diapering journey.

Getting a great fit starts with adjusting your rise settings. Your rise snaps will control the overall length of the diaper and can help protect against leg gaps and leaks. There are three rise settings on your one size cloth diaper. The lowest rise, or snapping the diaper on the front panel all the way down, generally fits babies from 8 to 20 pounds. The middle rise, or using the second snap on the front panel of the diaper, generally fits babies from 20 to 30 pounds and using your one size with the rise all the way unsnapped generally fits babies from 30 to about 40 pounds.

Once you have your rise settings selected, you can select the correct waist snaps easily. Make sure to choose corresponding upper and lower snaps to prevent bunching and gaps in your waist and snap the lower snap first to ensure you get a great leg fit. Although it seems like there are several steps to getting a good fit, and truthfully there are, once you get the hang of it, many of these steps will never have to be repeated. For instance, OS AIOs can be washed with the rise setting still snapped. So, once you choose the correct rise, you won’t have to adjust it for several more months.

#ThirstiesTip It’s important to adjust your rise settings before your waist snaps. Adjusting the rise first will allow you to select the correct waist snaps and eliminate leaks easily. Once your snaps are selected, run your fingers around the elastic in both the leg and the waist. If they feel snug to baby’s skin with no gaps, chances are you have a good fit.

Fiber Facts

Every cloth diaper system needs at least two parts: something that is absorbent and something that is waterproof. Your absorbency + your waterproofing make up everything you need for one diaper change. Each diaper system will put these two pieces together in a different way. But, what makes up a Thirsties One Size All In One?

This is where the ease of this diaper really shines. The top layer of the soaker pad and shell are lined with a stay-dry microfleece that wicks wetness away from baby, keeping baby feeling try and comfortable. The elastics on the waist and legs are completely lined with the same microfleece so that none of your TPU is touching baby. Not only does microfleece wick so easily, but it also makes diaper clean up a little easier. Solids tend not to stick to microfleece and sometimes using a diaper sprayer isn’t even necessary. (If you have yet to encounter toddler poop, please trust me when I say this is a huge benefit.)

There are four total layers of microfiber making up your absorbency inside your AIO. Microfiber is a fast absorbing material, meaning you are less likely to encounter diaper leaks and your dry time will be quicker too. (Sign me up for less laundry time any day.) The outside of your AIO is waterproof TPU, meaning that you don’t need to add any parts or pieces to this diaper system. The microfleece/microfiber absorbency + the waterproof TPU are everything you need.

#ThirstiesTip AIOs come in two different closures: hook and loop and snaps. We are commonly asked which is ‘better’ but honestly, it depends on personal preference. Snap closures are definitely easier to keep clean, but we always recommend that you consider the caregiver when making any cloth diapering decisions. Consider whether or not caregivers have the dexterity to squeeze together snaps or whether the of the hook and loop closure may be easier for caregivers who aren’t sure which snap is correct.

Bonus: Customizing Absorbency

Although this diapering system is meant to be used as a single, one step change, you can customize it to your baby’s needs by adding a doubler or booster to increase absorbency. If you choose an Organic Cotton Doubler, make sure to place your doubler underneath your AIO insert. This will allow the naturally wicking microfleece to do its job, while the doubler still gives you the benefit of more absorbency. If you choose a larger addition to your diaper like the Thirsties Hemp/Organic Cotton Insert, consider folding this insert slightly in the front to catch any flooding that can occur, while also placing it underneath the microfleece.

All In Ones were my first introduction to cloth diapering, and I truly loved them! I liked that I could explain how to use the diaper to my husband, friends, and family so easily. We definitely have used a lot of AIOs throughout our years of cloth diapering and I still get excited when I explain to new parents just how simple they can be to use.

I did struggle with getting the right amount of absorbency into my AIOs as we got closer to potty learning. Adding a booster can really make all the difference if you find it hard to get to the one hour mark between changes. (Ideally, you’ll want to change baby every one to two hours, but if you are struggling to make it to the hour mark, please consider using a booster! It can make all the difference.)

I always secretly loved how amazing Thirsties prints look in an AIO too. I was always ridiculously jealous of the mommas who could plan an entire day of AIOs in a cute little diaper lineup when I could barely remember if we had an diapers clean at all. I always swore I was going to do a diaper lineup shot eventually, but I was never that put together! #goals

One of the most popular questions I hear at the boutique is ‘what do you do with the dirty cloth diapers?’ Most caregivers who are new to cloth already know they will be washing diapers, but they just aren’t sure what happens in that in-between stage when a wet bag is exactly what they need.

Wet bags are the perfect waterproof go-between when you are out and about or it’s not yet time to wash. They will keep your dirty diapers contained and your diaper bag or storage area leak free. Wet bags are a cloth diaper necessity, no matter which cloth diaper system you choose.

Beyond being a popular curiosity, Thirsties wet bags are also usually the first to sell out on release day because they are so multi-functional. (This always makes me wonder if there is a secret Thirsties wet bag vault that must be dipped into to compare past colors and prints.) Once you add wet bags into your daily life, their uses can seem endless.

In this article, we are going to breakdown the capacity and use, laundry tips and care, and multi-functional uses of the Thirsties Wet Bag. Let’s start with capacity and use.

Capacity and Use

The Thirsties Wet Bag is suitable storage for a full day away from home as it can hold up to eight diapers. Waterproof TPU laminate and fully-taped waterproof seams prevent leaking and wicking, keeping everything else in your bag dry. This means you can store your dirty diapers in your wet bag and toss it in your diaper bag or vehicle without worrying about leaking or wicking onto other items or fabrics.

The Thirsties wet bag also has a cute, color-coordinated snap handle that may be used to hang from a doorknob or to wrap the wet bag for easy storage in a diaper bag. In terms of capacity, Thirsties does recommend up to eight diapers per wet bag, but this will greatly depend on the diapering system you are using. You will find eight Thirsties One Size Pockets to be a tight squeeze, but easily be able to pack up to ten Duo Hemp Prefolds. Once your wet bag is full, you can remove your diapers, turn it inside out, and launder your wet bag with the rest of your cloth diaper laundry.

#ThirstiesTip Remember to remove all solids (unless baby is exclusively breastfed) before putting your diapers in your washer. A diaper sprayer can help you make sure you remove all solids completely and your diapers come out clean.

Laundry Tips and Care

When doing cloth diaper laundry in general, it’s best to empty your wet bag into your diaper pail after use, if you are using a larger pail, or keep it unzipped until laundry day to allow air to circulate through your cloth diapers. Bacteria, molds and unwanted stink can begin to develop if your dirty wet bag is left closed for too long.

Washing your wet bags isn’t going to be very different from washing your cloth diapers and best of all, they require hardly any prep.

Before you use your Thirsties wet bag, wash once on warm with a small amount of cloth diaper safe detergent and hang dry or dry on low. That’s all the prep you need!

To wash your Thirsties wet bag after use, prewash on WARM with half the amount of recommended, cloth diaper safe detergent. Then do a heavy duty wash on HOT with the full amount of recommended, cloth diaper safe detergent. Add an extra rinse and hang dry or dry on low.

Although there are several cloth diaper safe laundry detergents available, try to avoid those with bleach, fabric softeners, pure soap or borax. They can damage your wet bag and void your warranty on your Thirsties products.
#ThirstiesTip Wet bags dry so fast. I have always hung mine to dry because I don’t trust my dryer. Hanging your wet bags to dry will also prolong the life of your wet bag so when in doubt, hang it out.

Multi-functional Uses

Thirsties Wet Bag Plume

So, are wet bags just for storing diapers? No way!

Thirsties wet bags can be great for so many things. 2018 has brought some fantastic Thristies Swim Diaper prints and wet bags can be great for wet suits and towels, flip flops and clothes. Although camping isn’t my personal favorite pastime, it’s one of those activities where bringing multiple wet bags is a must. Muddy sneakers and clothes, pants that smell like campfire or even tee shirts that have taken a dip in the lake all need wet bags.

Here are some of our favorite multi-functional ways to use wet bags:

  1. For after sports practices to keep dirty clothes separate
  2. For after swim class to keep wet suits separate
  3. When traveling, to separate dirty clothes
  4. As a reusable grocery bag
  5. To replace lunch boxes
  6. As an eco-friendly trash bag for your car or office
  7. To separate toiletries while packing
  8. For backup outfits while potty learning

#ThirstiesTip No matter how you use your wet bags, you can still throw them in with the rest of your cloth diaper laundry! No special cycles or maintenance needed. I choose to use my cloth diaper routine for all my wet bags, to keep them interchangeable. And, because I’m not responsible enough to remember for a fact which ones were used by the potty learning toddler and which ones weren’t.

It’s hard to think of very many things you can’t do with a wet bag, so I’ll share some of my very favorite uses instead. I always carry a ‘mom’ wet bag in my truck. I am often the very last person I pack for (I say as I eat dried dates for lunch at my desk) and because of this, I’m often the one without so many things I truly need throughout the day.

So, what’s inside MY wet bag? Always two tubes of Hurraw chapstick and at least one sample tube of my favorite lotion (Alaska problems). Two tampons, a single dose of Tylenol, an extra mascara and at least a few bobby pins, hair ties and a pack of deodorant wipes. (Deodorant wipes y’all, just trust me.) I also keep an emergency bar of the good dark chocolate, a $10 gift card to my favorite coffee house, an extra pair of contacts and this one pen I absolutely love and hate when it gets lost. Oh, and also this little rubber wine stopper that looks like a person that my toddler stuck in their ages ago and never seemed to retrieve.

It’s my emergency mom bag. When I just need two minutes to put my hair up or an extra coffee or, more often than not, deodorant wipes because I ran out the door too fast. Or maybe our day was absolutely too much and now it’s hockey and I just need to grab some mascara and go. Either way, wet bags are for moms too.

Do you use wet bags strictly for cloth diapers? Or have you branched out to using them for #allthethings? Tell us your favorite way to use the Thirsties wet bag in the comments!

Thirsties Animalia

It seems that prefolds and covers have gotten a somewhat negative reputation along the way as newer cloth diaper systems appeared that were more streamlined and (thought to be) easier. Yes, prefolds and covers are the more traditional method of cloth diapering. However, the Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefold, paired with a Duo Wrap make up an easy to use and budget friendly cloth diapering system that is far from what your parents or grandparents remember.

Duo Hemp Prefolds are created from the signature Thirsties 55% hemp/45% organic cotton blend, are naturally antimicrobial, trimmer and clean more easily compared to regular cotton prefolds. Made in the USA from soft hemp jersey, they are versatile, have an open design that allows for quick drying and are 25% more absorbent and more durable than pure cotton.

The Duo Hemp deserved its very own review because it’s so different than other prefolds on the market. In this article, we’ll discuss pairing your duo hemp prefold, sizing and use and laundry care and tips.

Let’s dive in with a perfect Thirsties pairing!

Pairing Your Duo Hemp Prefold

So, you’ve chosen the prefold and cover system, you want to use Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefolds and now you need a waterproof layer to successfully begin cloth diapering. Enter Thirsties Duo Wraps.

Thirsties Duo Wraps are the perfect cover to use with your prefolds and here’s the good news: choosing a size works pretty much the same way. Size One Duo Wraps are recommended to fit babies 6-18 lbs, while Size Two Duo Wraps are recommended for babies 18-40lbs. This past summer, Thirsties introduced a third option, the Size Three Duo Wrap, recommended for babies 40-60lbs+ as the final edition to their Duo Wrap lineup. Although there is not currently a Size Three Duo Hemp Prefold, you could easily pair your size twos.

You may also find that you prefer to add a booster to your prefold and cover system as well. There are several options here. One of my favorites is to use the Size Small Hemp Inserts as a third layer of absorbency. However, some caregivers prefer the Organic Cotton Doublers as they aren’t as wide as the hemp inserts.

Using a booster will give you extra absorbency for overnights, long car rides or, hopefully, long nap times. Boosters are one of those cloth diaper essential, can’t live without items. So, if you find yourself ready to get rid of them at any stage of your cloth diapering journey, I would encourage you to hang on to them as your baby and your need for boosters might change again soon.

#ThirstiesTip Because Thirsties makes so many versatile products, I have to mention the organic cotton wipes. One organic cotton wipe folded lengthwise can be the perfect booster for Newborn All In Ones or Size One Prefolds. These wipes are made from organic fibers, so easy to clean and provide just a little extra absorbency without adding any bulk. Plus, you probably already have them in your stash. #momhack

Sizing and Use

Sizing your prefolds couldn’t be easier. Size One Duo Hemp Prefolds are recommended to fit babies 6-18lbs, while Size Two Prefolds are recommended to fit babies 18-40lbs. Although these are general sizing recommendations, the stretch of the hemp/cotton blend will allow you to get a few extra pounds out of your prefolds on either side.

Once you have chosen your size, using your prefolds is simple.

  1. For smaller babies, fold under the top flap to decrease your length.
  2. Next, fold the diaper into thirds and fan out the back for better coverage.
  3. Tuck your tri-folded diaper into your Thirsties Duo Wrap or Diaper Cover.
  4. Place under baby and secure with snaps or hook & loop closure.

#ThirstiesTip Don’t skip fanning out your diaper in the back for better coverage. This will help contain leaks and eliminate blowouts. Do the fan out, trust me.

Laundry Tips and Care

Like all Thirsties’ hemp products, your prep will be slightly different for your Duo Hemp Prefolds. You’ll want to prep your prefolds separate from your other cloth diaper products due to the oils and residue released from the hemp fiber in your prep. Once your prefolds are prepped, you can launder them as normal with the rest of your Thirsties cloth diaper products.

So, how do you actually prep a prefold?

To prep your prefold, you’ll need to start with cloth diaper safe detergent. Using a small amount of detergent, wash and dry your prefold at least three times before use. For maximum absorbency, you’ll want to wash and dry your prefold eight times. You can absolutely use your prefolds after three wash and dry cycles, just know that they will get more absorbent over time.

Before washing your prefolds, you’ll want to remove any solid waste present (unless your baby is exclusively breastfed). You can do this by using a disposable liner, spraying out your diapers using a diaper sprayer or using the ‘dunk and swish method’ in the toilet.

Once the solids have been completely removed from your diapers, it’s time to wash. Some caregivers opt to remove solids as they are present, which is preferable, and not wait until laundry day. However, it’s more important that you find a routine and a system that works for yourself and your family than it is that you are doing exactly what every other cloth diaper friend is doing. #youdoyou

To wash your Thirsties Duo Hemp prefold:

    1. Pre-wash on WARM with half the recommended amount of detergent.

    1. Do a long, heavy duty wash on HOT with the recommended amount of detergent.

  1. Add an extra rinse.

This routine will give you a great place to start, in general. You may need to alter your routine slightly if you have hard water or are using the bucket and plunger method.

#ThirstiesTip The open design makes Thirsties prefolds very easy to clean. If you are having trouble getting your prefolds clean (stain-free is a different topic), make sure your wash routine is not too complicated or too lengthy. Cloth diaper launder should be simple and easy!

The signature Thirsties hemp/organic cotton blend is one of my absolute favorite fiber combinations in the cloth diaper world. It’s so thirsty, so trim and cleans so easily. The prefold and cover system is also budget friendly, easy to add to over time and works well with multiple children in cloth.

I was a little intimidated by prefolds and covers at first, so I opted for All In Ones with my first baby. When I finally did try the prefold and cover system, I was so upset that I had convinced myself it was any more difficult than All In Ones. I actually prefer to clean a load of prefolds and covers because it’s just so simple. In other words, keep your options open. Consider visiting a local cloth diaper retailer and ask if they have any Cloth 101 classes to offer or demo diapers that you can use to practice.

Has your baby outgrown their prefolds? Prefolds make great burp cloths, surface wipes, potty learning pads and more! Hang on to those outgrown size ones and use them around the house. How do you use your old prefolds?

Thirsties Duo Wrap

For the most part, all cloth diapering systems are comprised of two pieces: one that is absorbent and one that prevents leaks. In other words, you need a waterproof layer to prevent leaks and an absorbent layer to successfully soak up liquids when cloth diapering.

Thirsties Duo Wrap diaper covers are completely waterproof yet remain breathable, pliable, and comfortable for baby’s skin. A trim fit, double gusset leak protection and super soft bindings work together to create that signature fit while keeping leaks away. Duo Wrap sizing and care is so simple and because you can use the same Duo Wrap three to four times, you’ll need fewer wraps in your rotation as well.

In this article, we will breakdown the fit features, how to choose absorbency and laundry care tips for all your Thirsties Duo Wraps.

First, let’s talk fit!

Fit Features

There are lots of covers on the market right now, but Thirsties Duo Wrap is so thoughtfully designed, the signature fit is just perfect. The three sizes help alleviate bunching and excess material without having to size your cover up four or even five times before potty learning. Here’s how to choose the right size for baby:

  1. Size One Duo Wraps are recommended for babies 6-18 lbs. Having a rough estimate of your baby’s weight is a great place to start, but don’t forget to consider which type of absorbency you will be using for your Duo Wrap. If you choose to go with a bulkier all cotton prefold, you may need to size up sooner than you think. At the same time, if you choose the trimmer Duo Hemp Prefolds, you may be able to squeeze a few extra pounds out of your size ones before moving up.
  2. Size Two Duo Wraps are recommended for babies 18-40 lbs. Consider again your fiber choice before making the decision to size up. You’re looking for a snug, flat fit, so don’t be tempted to size up too early either.
  3. Size Three Duo Wraps are recommended for toddlers and preschoolers 40-60+ lbs. This is Thirsties’ newest Duo Wraps style and so important for toddlers and beyond that aren’t quite ready for potty learning.

So, what makes Thirsties Duo Wraps different from other covers? Double gussets around the leg elastics provide even more leak protection than other covers. Because no one wants to deal with a diaper blowout. Ever.

Speaking of elastics, not only do Duo Wraps have double gussets around the legs to protect against leaks, they also have elastic on both the back and front waist panels to help create that perfect fit. Being able to stretch both the back and front panels allows caregivers to choose waist snaps easily and properly. #ProTip When fitting your waist snaps, secure the snap closest to baby’s back first, then the last wing snap. This will allow you to find your perfect fit and secure it before snapping the rest of the cover.

Three inches of waterproof TPU at the front panel of your Duo Wrap closest to baby’s tummy will enhance your leak protection as well. Leak proof nap time? Yes, please.

Each Duo Wrap size also has three rise settings each. Choosing your rise setting first will help you determine which waist snaps are correct for baby’s size. On the Size One Duo Wrap for instance, the lowest rise setting, or snapping the cover all the way down, is typically used for babies 6-10 lbs. Babies 10-15 lbs may fit the middle rise setting while completely unsnapping the rise snaps will best fit babies 15-18lbs.

However, it is more important that you choose the rise setting that best fits your baby, not necessarily the setting that falls into baby’s weight recommendation. If you reach a point that your cover doesn’t seem to fit as exactly as it once did, that usually means it’s time to let out a rise and find a new waist snap!

#ThirstiesTip The perfect fit is flat! Look for a flat rise setting, flat bottom and smooth Duo Wrap all around. Bunching, extra material or pulling can result in leaks. And don’t forget about sizing up your Duo Wrap when the time is right. Choosing the wrong size can also result in bunching and leaks.

Choosing Absorbency

Choosing the right absorbency for your Duo Wrap will help prevent leaks and keep baby comfortable. As your baby grows and changes, the ‘right’ absorbency will most likely change quite a bit. You’ll need enough absorbent material to prevent leaks, but not so much that your diaper is too bulky or that the leg and waist elastics don’t fit snuggly.

Prefolds are a popular absorbency choice for Duo Wraps because they are so versatile. Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefolds are 25% more absorbent than a prefold of the same weight made from cotton alone and come in two sizes, size one recommended for 6-18 lb babies and size two recommended for 18-40 lb babies. Made with the Thirsties signature 55% hemp/45% organic cotton, Duo Hemp Prefolds can simply be tri-folded and laid inside your Duo Wrap without having to use pins or Snappis.

Cleaning prefolds is easy and the Duo Hemp Prefold even has an open layer on the inside to make sure that each layer of fiber is thoroughly cleaned in your washer. The Duo Hemp Prefold is much trimmer than cotton prefolds, which makes it simple to get a great fit, no matter which size you are using.

The Thirsties Stay Dry Duo Insert is another Duo Wrap combination favorite because it features a stay dry layer that wicks wetness away from baby, leaving baby feeling dry. The Stay Dry Duo Insert actually has two inserts that snap together to make one complete absorbency system. I know that extra steps aren’t everyone’s favorite thing when it comes to cloth diaper laundry, but in this case, it’s absolutely worth it.

The first insert is constructed of two layers of Thirsties’ fast absorbing microfiber terry and topped with the stay dry and stain-resistant microfleece. The second insert, which should be snapped to the underside of the microfiber insert, consists of 5 layers of the super-absorbent 55% hemp/45% organic cotton jersey. It’s like the perfect problem solving blend of ‘please don’t wake up because you feel wet’ and ‘please don’t leak because you like to pee three times a nap’ all in one.

#ThirstiesTip There aren’t a lot of rules when it comes to absorbency. If you find an insert or prefold or combination of both that is working for you, use it! At the same time, if there are pieces in your absorbency collection that aren’t working very well for your current stage, hang onto them. As your baby grows and changes, you may come back to certain pieces that you weren’t loving previously and be glad that you kept them around.

Laundry Tips and Care

Caring for your Duo Wraps is quick and easy. Start first by finding a cloth diaper safe detergent you love and prep your Duo Wrap.

Another benefit to using covers? The prep is short and sweet. To prep your Duo Wrap, you’ll just need to wash once in your cloth diaper safe detergent and you are ready to use.

To launder your Duo Wrap after use, you’ll need to:

    1. Pre-wash on WARM with half the amount of recommended detergent.
    1. Wash on HOT with the full amount of recommended detergent.
    1. Add another rinse on WARM.
  1. Hang dry or dry in your dryer on low.

#ThirstiesTip Your laundry routine shouldn’t be incredibly complicated. If you find that you are needing too many steps to get your diapers clean, using several products and/or different wash cycles to clean your diapers, reevaluate whether your diapers need a strip. Long term ammonia build up can leave your wash routine becoming more and more complicated without ever really resulting in clean diapers.

It took me a while to come around to covers and prefolds, but it was mostly because I didn’t know how easy they could be. I was pleasantly surprised to find that using prefolds and covers was not only budget friendly, but simple too. My cloth diapers were easy to clean, I needed less covers in my rotation and I needed to pack less in my diaper bag each day. #winning

I can’t say enough how much it has helped to hang onto some of the cloth diaper styles that I didn’t think were working for us at different stages (especially the absorbency pieces). Having different styles in your diaper rotation makes it easier to choose exactly what you need for daytime, nap time and nighttime and makes your diapering system so much more versatile.

Thirsties Stay Dry Duo Insert

For the most part, the cloth diaper hype is all about different styles and prints, while the products we rely on the most don’t get the same amount of love. (Because, have you seen Flutter By? Wow.) However, it’s absorbency like the Stay Dry Duo Insert that makes a cloth diaper caregiver’s world go around.

One of the most common questions in the cloth diaper world is ‘Which is the best insert for babies with wetness sensitivity?’ Wetness sensitivity can be uncomfortable for baby and stressful for baby’s caregiver, not to mention difficult to overcome. Rashes become more prevalent, parents become more frustrated and sometimes, caregivers give up on cloth diapering altogether. Enter Thirsties Stay Dry Duo Insert!

In this article, we will breakdown the fiber facts, design and prep and care for the Thirsties Stay Dry Duo Insert. And since this workhorse is all about the fibers, let’s begin with the fiber facts.

Fiber Facts

Thirsties Natural One Size All In One

Thirsties Natural One Size All In One

When I think of Thirsties, I think fiber first. The Thirsties signature 55% hemp/45% organic cotton blend is one of my absolute favorites and this blend happens to be one half of the Stay Dry Duo. Products like the Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefold and the Natural One Size All In One cloth diaper share the same hemp/organic cotton blend as well.

The Stay Dry Duo Insert actually has two inserts that snap together to make one complete absorbency system. I know that extra steps aren’t everyone’s favorite thing when it comes to cloth diaper laundry, but in this case, it’s absolutely worth it.

The first insert is constructed of two layers of Thirsties’ fast absorbing microfiber terry and topped with their stay-dry and stain-resistant microfleece. If you were wondering, yes, stain-resistant microfleece is a must. This makes introducing solids so much easier on your wash routine and on yourself.

The second insert, which should be snapped to the underside of the microfiber insert, consists of 5 layers of the super-absorbent 55% hemp – 45% organic cotton jersey. Again, that signature blend is where you are going to find the bulk of your absorbency, even though it’s the trimmest layer by far. It’s like the best of both worlds, if ‘both worlds’ were all about catching poop.

#ThirstiesTip I find that if I snap all our inserts together fresh out of the dryer, other caregivers are more likely to grab and use them. Because there is a length difference in the size one and size two inserts, I find it easier to sit down and snap them all at once so that I don’t end up with two odd sizes at the end of diaper laundry.

Thirsties Stay Dry Duo Insert

Thirsties Stay Dry Duo Insert

The thoughtful design of this insert is why I refer to this particular product as a workhorse. The microfleece/microfiber insert is fast absorbing and pulls wetness away from baby quickly preventing rashes and helping to relieve wetness sensitivity. It also help solids sit on top of this layer, making waste removal quick and simple.

So, why is this important?

When babies feel wet, they become irritable, uncomfortable and can have a difficult time focusing. Adding this stay dry insert to help keep baby feeling dry between changes will allow the caregiver to prep a bottle, throw in a load of clothes or even finish the last bit of (cold) coffee without worrying about whether baby will become cranky or rashy.

It’s key that the stay dry layer stay on top of the hemp/organic cotton layer for a few reasons:

  1. We don’t want microfiber touching baby’s skin.
  2. The stay dry layer will absorb faster than the hemp/organic cotton layer.
  3. The hemp/organic cotton layer truly shines in its ability to absorb a large amount of liquid and is best served underneath the microfleece/microfiber layer.

When trying to remember which fibers absorb the fastest, remember this: My Cloth Baby’s Happy. In order from fastest absorbing to slowest absorbing materials, the fibers rank like this: Microfiber, Cotton, Bamboo and then Hemp. Meaning, microfiber and microfleece will always pull wetness away from baby faster than any other fiber.

As far as sizing goes, this design was very straight and to the point. Babies weighing 6-18 lbs will be comfortable in a size one Stay Dry Duo, while babies 18-40 lbs will need a size two Stay Dry Duo. Has your baby outgrown their size one Stay Dry Duos? Don’t get rid of them just yet! These layers make for exceptional doublers when using other Thirsties systems as well. Hang on to these layers and double them up for naptime, car rides and nighttime.

#ThirstiesTip Absorbency and fibers are forgiving. Don’t worry too much about knowing your child’s exact weight when selecting the perfect size. A few pounds either way won’t make or break how much you love the Stay Dry Duos or prevent them from providing great absorbency.

Prep and Care

Stay Dry Duo Features

This doesn’t happen often, but when prepping the Thirsties Stay Dry Duo inserts, you’ll want to unsnap them all and prep the hemp/organic cotton insert separate from the microfiber/microfleece insert. This is because the synthetic layer (microfiber/microfleece) only needs one wash with cloth diaper safe detergent before use. However, your hemp/organic cotton insert will need a different sort of prep.

The hemp/organic cotton insert needs three wash and dry cycles (separate from other cloth diaper products) before use and eight wash and dry cycles to be completely prepped. In other words, go ahead and complete the three wash and dry cycles separate from your microfiber/microfleece insert and you can begin to use your Stay Dry Duo. Just know that your absorbency will continue to increase up to eight full wash and dry cycles.

#ThirstiesTip This is one of the rare instances where some fibers in a particular cloth diaper product need more prep than others. Always plan for the fiber requiring the longest prep. Although your stay dry layer doesn’t need the eight washes like your hemp and organic cotton layer, you will be glad you completed a full prep.

I wrote off any sort of absorbency with synthetic fibers for a long time. I was 100% convinced that I had absolutely no use for synthetic fibers in my cloth diaper collection. Enter new baby with severe wetness sensitivity.

The Stay Dry Duo was perfect for us. My baby stayed dry, the organic cotton and hemp insert underneath gave her more absorbency and saved us from leaks while my husband loved the ‘lay it in and go’ aspect. #dadterms

One of the most important things I’ve learned in my years of cloth diapering (and parenting) is that every kiddo is different and what worked for some of my babies definitely didn’t work for others. At the same time, what I thought was bullet proof for our nighttime routine, didn’t necessarily work for some of my friends.

Here’s the realness: don’t write anything off completely. Hang on to a style that might not be working for you right now, keep the absorbency that seems like it will never have a place in your routine and definitely bring tacos to the friend who is struggling with a stage that you might not have found difficult. The next stage or next baby or next year will have surprises waiting and you’ll need a friend to bring you tacos too.
