A prefold is a flat diaper that is usually quilted and can be trifolded or fastened under a diaper cover. They are the workhorse of the cloth diapering world, and very affordable and versatile. Thirsties has strived to overcome many of the cons of prefolds in the design of the Duo Hemp Prefold:
We have the same amount of layers throughout, accept at the top which you can fold down- Patent-pending design is easy to clean, quick to dry, and grows with your baby
- Made from buttery soft custom hemp jersey knitted in the USA (55% Hemp, 45% Cotton)
- 25% more absorbent and much more durable than pure cotton
- Maintains a trim and comfortable fit
- Naturally antimicrobial
Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefolds are designed for free-flow of air and washing water. Each panel is only 2 layers thick, permitting thorough cleansing with little effort and quick drying times.
Our custom hemp jersey is as soft as your favorite t-shirt and it’s knitted with love right here in the USA. Hemp is an ideal diaper fabric as it displays antimicrobial properties, is many times more durable, and is more absorbent than cotton. In fact, our hemp jersey is 25% more absorbent than a prefold of the same weight made from cotton alone! This translates into a very trim and effective cloth diaper with a hefty amount of absorbing power.
Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefolds are best trifolded into a trim cover, such as the Duo Wrap.
Here is an illustration of the Trifold:
Note: Sharp diaper pins and Snappi fasteners are made for woven fabrics, and thus can damage a knit fabric such as our Duo Hemp Prefold.
Prefolds are very absorbent and versatile diapers. If you are looking for a reliable and affordable diapering option, prefolds may be your best bet!

My first cloth diaper was pri-folds and Thirsties covers! Love love love them!
interesting, I didn’t know that snappis shouldn’t be used with hemp prefold. thanks!
I love love LOVE my Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefolds. They are my ‘go to’ diaper for night time!
I am using duo wraps and prefolds on my 10 week old… love them so far!!
I, too, LOVE these prefolds! They are awesome for stuffing in our pocket diapers or just using in a cover. My son is a heavy wetter and these diapers have been my salvation!
I am newer to cloth diapering. The first prefolds I bought were gerber.. what a joke! Then I purchased an unbleached cotton Imagine and a Bamboo Imagine. Love them. The only problem is they take so long to dry. These should be my next purchase!
Good to know that snappis hurt knit fabrics like your prefold.
I love our prefolds and cover system. We’ve been using our prefolds for almost three years now and other than the stains they don’t show any signs of wear.
I love my Thirsties hemp prefolds. They are super absorbent and were a great step up when my son started out-peeing his (premium quality) infant prefolds. However, I have to disagree about fast drying. They take forever to dry along the stitching line where the four layers of fabric meet. Still, that’s a minor problem and certainly doesn’t stop me using them.
I didn’t know snappis could hurt these!
This is great information. We started our diaper stash with a range of different types, but we consistently go back to prefolds and covers because they’re just so easy and effective. I didn’t realize that Thirsties prefolds were primarily made of hemp!
If they were only 25% pricier than classic cotton prefolds in addition to being 25% more absorbent, you can bet I’d use them all the time. The 2 we have are great, but not so much better as to justify the cost in our limited budget.
I’m considering the duo wrap and hemp prefolds for my almost 6 month old but I’m so glad I read that they shouldn’t be used with pins or snappis. I’m testing out a friends cotton prefolds and I’ve been doing the jelly roll fold with snappis because I’m worried about holding all the poop in! But I love the cute patterns Thirsties has and I’ve read great reviews on all the products.
I love how soft these are and how quickly they dry! I didn’t know though that snappis and sharp pins can hurt them! Will have to make a mental note of that so I don’t use them!
Wow, I’m glad you noted that Snappis shouldn’t be used on knit fabrics, I had no idea!
love love love that they’re made in the USA!! I only wish they were cheaper so I could buy more!
I bought some premium unbleached organic cotton prefolds and I so didn’t realize how big they would be. Now my baby boy has a big ‘ol bubble butt!
I’d like to try hemp and compare the absorbency.
I’ve been trying to figure out the difference between lots of different prefolds – thanks for giving the down low on yours!
I need to try these. I love how the top flap is only one layer to reduce bulk when folded down.
Like many comments, I didn’t know you shouldn’t use snappis or pins. Are there any other fasteners that are approved for these pre-folds so you can use other folds? I’ve heard great things about hemp pre-folds so hopefully we can use these at some point!
These look amazing. I’m looking forward to using prefolds and covers with my first baby this October!
I have yet to venture into the prefold/cover world but have been doing research and these look so much easier than I thought! Also heard hemp is an amazing fabric to use!
I had one of the hemp prefolds when my guy was small, and it did work great. In fact, I should find it again and use it as an overnight doubler. I did us pins on it some, and it did cause small holes in the fabric. I never considered buying more in the larger size for that reason. Now if Thirsties would make a USA -made woven cotton prefold, I’d be all over it!
what a neat design with the fold-down front!
I love these prefolds, super slim and haven’t had a leak yet!
I love pre-folds because of how economical they are! I’ve only tried cotton pre-folds thus far and have found them to be quite easy to clean; in 6 months I’ve only stripped them once, and then only because we were going on a week-long vacation and I had the opportunity to wash all of them at once before the trip. Are the hemp really as easy to clean? It sounds like they might even be easier due to how thin they are, i just wonder about the fabric holding on to smells.
Also, bummed you can’t use Snappis with them. I love the jelly roll fold.
