Suspenders and mid-belly maternity pants: a perfect pairing

Can we take a minute to talk about maternity clothes? I’ve got a beef with the brilliant person who designed mid-belly maternity pants. I mean, who, in their right mind, would decide to create maternity pants that have a tiny (in comparison to my growing maternal belly) elastic band, cover it in fabric and have it rest mid-belly on a pregnant woman? In theory it may seem like a great idea; you have this stretchy fabric that will allow the pregnant woman to wear the same pants through her pregnancy. Notice I said, “in theory?”

I don’t know; maybe some of you reading this will write back and say, “Bert! You crazy, hormonal woman! These are the greatest designed pants for maternity wear to come on the scene!” And you may be correct. One thing is certain, I am hormonal which tends to lead to some crazy thinking. Holiday Shopping: For the Kids, With the Kids

I am about to tell those of you with toddlers something you already know–and for those of you with sweet, quiet, drowsy newborns, who will sleep through an entire shopping trip, this is something you will find out next year at this time: Shopping with babies, toddlers and kids can be hard–so hard you’d rather push a cart of hungry goats around the store than your own children.

Cooper is two and a half–and not in any sort of daycare or preschool–and we hardly have a babysitter. I do all the grocery shopping with him either running ahead of me or behind me, narrowly being hit by other distracted shoppers, or sitting in the cart, which means I am constantly trying to find different distractions (bribes) to keep him from climbing out–snacks, toys, my cell phone OR he’s trying to climb out anyway. The safety straps on shopping carts have … Read More

What’s worth more? Gifts or Memories?

Gifts or Memories. Thirsties. Bert AndersonHave you ever looked around at your house and wondered how on earth you acquired so much stuff? Seriously, we have so much stuff in our house that’s kid related; I think a pre-holiday purge is a necessary event this year. From hand-me-down toys to new toys, mismatched toys to full on sets, you name it my kids have it. And within 38 days they’ll have even more toys, games, books, puzzles, etc. I’m not knocking the generosity of our friends and family; I’m grateful for it but often I look around my house and think, “We could have less.”

This week on the Huffington Post one mom daringly wrote about how her children do not need gifts and she was going to tell her family this before the holidays. I was appalled at first at the thought of my children not receiving any presents for Christmas. How could I … Read More
