For the past six months I’ve been researching, mixing up and trying out different recipes for cleaning products that are easy and economical to make. Here’s what I’m now using:
Homemade Dishwashing Detergent (Powdered):
2 cups of Borax
2 cups of Baking Soda
1/4 cup of Lemi Shine
Lemi Shine is simply crystalized citric acid. I had never heard of it but found it right in the dishwasher detergent aisle at my regular grocery store. It helps to cut grease and is anti-bacterial. It also helps to prevent water spots on the rinse cycle.
Homemade Laundry Detergent (not safe to use on cloth diapers)
3 cups of Super Washing Soda
3 cups of Borax
1 cup of Oxygen Booster
3 Bars of Ivory Soap, grated
I am also using soap nuts which I really like but I wanted to try making another option just to see how it would work so that I could pass it on to all of you. Surprisingly, my laundry comes out clean and not really smelling like much of anything. I mixed up a big batch and keep it in a large tub that once held kitty litter.
Multi-Purpose Spray Cleaner
2 cups of citrus vinegar (made by soaking orange rinds in white vinegar in a sealed glass jar for 2 weeks)
2 cups of water
10-20 drops of Tea Tree Oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract or Colloidal Silver
This works great for counter-tops both in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as our leather couch, wood floors and table tops. Best of all, I feel safe letting even my littlest helper spritz while I wipe.
For everything else, I use baking soda. It’s great for scrubbing pots and pans with stuck on grime because it’s a mild abrasive, it polishes the stainless steel sink, scours out the inside of the coffee pot, cleans the inside of the car and leaves the tub sparkling. You know you’re using something non-toxic when you can clean your tub with while you’re taking a shower!

I have been switching out my chemical cleansers for safe/friendly ones. Until last week I had no idea there was bleach in dish detergent!!! I know, I know, I feel like an idiot! Either way I wanted to find a dish detergent recipe… so thanks! The only thing I need to get is the Lemi Shine.
We do laundry detergent with just washing soda, borax, and essential oils. What do you think the Ivory soap and oxygen cleanser add – just fragrance and brightening?
thanks for sharing the recipes! I use a similar recipe for my laundry detergent! tell me–so, I don’t use that for cloth diapers but I do switch back and forth between that and my cloth diaper detergent–do you think there’s any residue problems with doing that?
I can’t wait to try multipurpose spray cleaner. I have been wanting to try something that is a little safer with my little guy around.
love your recipe. i plan to try it asap
What is Lemi shine and where can I buy it? I’d like to try that recipe.
I’m so glad I found this post! I already make the first two, but I’ve been wanting to find a spray cleaner recipe. Thank you!
I just started making my own laundry detergent for my diapers. It’s Borax, washing soda, and little bit of Dawn (or Oxiclean, or Ivory) dissolved in warm water. Only been using it a week, but so far it’s working well. I look forward to trying your recipes.
I will have to try out the dishwashing recipe! And I love the idea of putting citrus rinds in vinegar- my husband hates the smell of it, but I think the orange oil would make it much more bearable for him. I have been switching over most of our household products (including beauty products too) to homemade solutions- would love to hear more suggestions!
I’ve tried several different homemade laundry and dishwashing detergents, but these seem much easier. Excited to try them!
We’ve been using baking soda & vinegar for cleaning solution for some time. A great way to get rid of the stench is to use orange essential oil. The oil also comes in handy for those natural scented discs that you stick in diaper pails when they run out of ‘juice’. Use the same disc with a couple drops of that orange oil, and it’ll be as good as new!
Ooo, I love the multi-purpose cleaning spray idea! I’m hesitant on the others, though… I don’t like the thought of having borax around my house…
I’ve been looking for an easy recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing! I will have to try these out.
Wow, thanks! I was just googling recipes and here I find some on my favorite blog, lol!
The dishwashing detergent sounds interesting! Will have to look for the Lemi Shine here. Now is it for sink washing or the dishwasher or both? LOL
I’ll have to try that all purpose cleaner! I used to use vinegar and baking soda to clean things but my family complained about the smell so much I stopped using it. I’ll have to try it with the citrus peels. Thank you.
I can’t wait to try the homemade detergent!
Thank you for these!
Does this cause irritation with sensitive skinned babes? My daughter is really sensitive and I have heard tea tree oil can be harsh.
I have made my own laundry detergent before but not this recipe. I will have to try this recipe!
I remember an aquaintance many years ago having her washer drainage hooked up to her garden. She would somehow use her diaper water as fertilizer for her lawn. Any ideas on this? Anyone ever tried it. I was in college at the time and not thinking about my own babies or cloth diapering for real.
I’m thinking homemade dish detergent is a great idea!
I actually found a recipe for DIY bac-out that’s been working wonderfully
I was making my own detergent, using washing soda, borax, and Zote soap. I use oxygen bleach, but don’t mix it with the detergent. Just personal preference. I think it works pretty well. I tried it with Fels Naptha, but found I don’t like the smell. I love the smell of Zote soap. For my all purpose cleaner I just mix vinegar and water half and half. Cleaning my bathroom, I’ve been known to cut a lemon or lime in half and sprinkle borax or baking soda on it and scrubbing everything with it. Really got my sink shining! Lately my husband has been cleaning the bathrooms and he likes to use the other stuff. I think I might have to mix up some more cleaning stuff and convince him to use them instead. We’ll see.
I have everything to make these but haven’t yet
this reminded me to get on it!
