When I first started using Thirsties Cloth Diapers, I also started using their reusable cloth wipes. I think I have about 36 wipes in
my stash now. They are super soft and made from the same material as the Duo Fab Fitteds. Not only do I use them for diaper changes, I use them as washcloths to wipe sticky hands, cheeks or runny noses. When I am changing Cooper’s diapers, I use Thirsties Booty Luster with the wipes–a couple of sprays of Booty Luster on Cooper’s tush, clean him up with a wipe, and toss it into my wet bag with the dirty diapers–saving me money and not putting disposable wipes into the landfill.
You can also make your own cleaning solution at home to use with your cloth wipes. I did a quick online search to see what other parents are using. Here is what I found:
Mild baby soap
Olive oil
Witch Hazel
Tea tree oil
Calendula oil
Lavender oil
Aloe vera
Apricot oil
White vinegar
Honey
Baking soda
Here are three recipes I’m going to try that I found on a great website called ecocrazymom.com:
Tea Tree and Lavender
**great for preventing and treating diaper rash
1/8 cup of olive oil or baby oil
1 tablespoon of baby wash
5 drops of tea tree oil
10 drops of lavender oil
3 cups of water
Anti-Fungal
**great for treating yeast infection diaper rashes (Cooper has had two of these nasty, slow-healing rashes after taking antibiotics so if he gets one again I’m mixing up a batch of this solution!)
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon calendula oil
5 drops lavender oil
5 drops tea tree oil
1/4 100% aloe vera gel
1 cup of water
Herbal Solution
2 cups of water
2 teaspoons of baby wash
1/4 cup of 100% aloe vera gel
1 teaspoon calendula oil
3 drops of tea tree oil
3 drops rosemary oil
2 drops of eucalyptus oil
You can take any of these recipes and tweak them–add a little more or a little less of any ingredients or add a drop of your favorite baby-safe essential oil to come up with your own custom cleaning solution to use with your cloth wipes. Maybe you already have a favorite mixture? If you do, please share it with us!
**Disclaimer: Please note that if you do use any of the above ingredients (especially oils) that you wash your cloth wipes separately from your cloth diapers.

I used to use baby wash diluted in water, but found that it wasn’t so great for my diapers…too much soap, I guess. Since my third baby was born, we’ve been using about a teaspoon of baby oil plus five or so drops of grapefruit oil diluted in water in a peri bottle (from our midwife after Lucy’s birth). It works great, and we’ve been washing the wipes with the diapers with no problems.
I do a variation on the first and love being able to whip it up so fast!
Most of the time I use good old fashioned water. Sometimes I mix in a bit of baby soap if I’m feeling adventurous. It does a good enough job. I certainly don’t use anything more than toilet paper to clean myself up, so why would she need it?
Thanks for all the great ideas! I’ve just been using baby soap and water, but definitely done great tips!
I make my own too!! and love it..I notice that since I we started using reusable wipes his skin is always so soft and he smells great!!
These are awesome! I just got these the other day and they are my fav cloth wipes!
I usually use two cups of boiled water with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, dampen the wipes, then put them in a Munchkin wipe warmer. It works great! My next batch I’m going to try a couple drops of tea tree oil and lavender.
I’m excited to try this! Thanks for the recipes.
We love our reuseable wipes! We just use water so we can stick to one diaper pail — and we don’t need a trash can, either.
We have wipes but haven’t taken the plunge using them. Question: Do you use them with soiled diaper changes? If so, do you spray them off first? Like the diaper?
once we started cloth diapering, cloth wipes became such a no-brainer. i’m already doing the laundry, and her tushie’s so much happier using mild baby soap and water instead of disposable wipes.
I usually use water or a quick recipe of: 2/3 parts water, 1/3 part witch hazel, and a few drops of tea tree oil. Nice and easy to make with a great scent.
After switching to cloth diapers I started thinking about cloth wipes, but didn’t take the plunge until I found out one of my friends was already using cloth wipes on her baby. So I recently gave it a try and love it! I mainly use water mixed with a tiny bit of baby soap, but sometimes I add some olive oil.
I made my own cloth wipes. I bought tan flannel (because that was the color they would end up being anyway, right?) and cut it into 8×8 squares, then stitched two squares together using a zigzag stitch (because flannel frays). I made 25 wipes when I started using cloth, and then before I had my second baby I made 25 more. We usually make a solution that is one squirt of baby wash, one squirt of baby oil, and about a cup of water. We keep it in a squirt bottle and squirt it right on their bum or else onto the wipes. I agree that plain old water works fine, though. When my daughter was little I would just get a couple of wipes wet in the sink and that worked fine. The cloth wipes have come in very handy for cleaning up messes while we’ve been potty training the last couple of weeks.
I like this idea but I don’t want to wash cloth wipes separately from cloth diapers! what a pain! So far we just use water in a spray bottle and spray each wipe before use, but as we move into solid foods I was thinking of putting a little bit of baby shampoo into the water.
I like plain water!
Biggest recommendation with making your own wipes solution—
Use distilled water. Ickies are alteadibg living in your tap water. so at least boil it.
I tried plain water and dd got all red and chapped. I have to admit that I’m way too lazy to mix up my own solution. We’ve ended up using flushable wipes for most diaper changes and busting out the cloth wipes (with water) for big messes. Now that we’re starting solids, we’re also starting to see more of those big messes, though…
Very helpful. Thanks for sharing!!
I’m glad I saw this blog post – I’ve always wondered what you could use for a cloth wipes solution. Thanks!
I tried a homemade concoction of tea tree oil soap and water. After a while I just lazy and bought some pre-made stuff because it lasts so much longer.
I’m experimenting with what to use – my husband and I are having our first and are just thinking about what to do wipes-wise. These are great to think about!
I also just use water with my cloth wipes. I have a cloth wipe warmer so I can easily keep a stash of wet wipes next to my changing pad.
Using cloth diapers, but haven’t gone all the way to cloth wipes! I am wondering what you changing table set up is? Are they already wet? do you spray them with solution before using? Do you carry them in your diaper bag? If so, how? My husband uses SO MANY wipes per messy diaper… and I don’t see him up for any extra steps…
We keep a small spray bottle of solution next to both changing stations — our solution is a little baby soap, a drop of tea tree oil, a very small amount of Burt’s Bee’s apricot oil blend, and a lot of water. I shake it before spraying — seems to work OK! No repelling yet, even though we wash with our dipes (I wouldn’t do it otherwise — that sounds like a cruel joke to me.) Even using a lot of sprays per change, we havne’t even made a dent in our solution.
We don’t carry them with us, although if I had a reliable snap-on cover for the spray bottle, there’d be no reason I wouldn’t. Our friends keep a small number prewetted in a small wetbag (or ziplock if you don’t have a tiny wetbag) in their diaper bag.
This post is awesome! Thank you times a million, not sure why I never thought of trying a home-made anti-fungal solution before. We have a mild yet very annoying problem with yeast infections.
Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
I’m so glad i found this post. I usually use plain water and a wash cloth, but have been thinking of trying something in addition to the water to help sooth any rashes or see if the additive will hep clean off the bum sooner for when I’m not at home. I’ve been using a travel pack of disposable wipes (even though I use the wash clothes at home) when I’m out but I’d like to discontinue that. Thanks for the great info and options, and also the other interesting comments from others’ experiences.
I just registered from some Thirsties Wipes. At first I was skeptical, but the more I have thought about it, it seems to just make sense if you already cloth diaper!
I love the Booty Luster (I had to LOL when I first heard the name), I mostly use it when I’m out and about and when I’m home I just moisten my cloth wipes with warm water before I clean. My son absolutely hates those cold wet wipes you can buy on his bum, so cloth wipes make diaper changes much more easy for him.
i love the variation i will try every one of this on my baby!
I use an alcohol free witch hazel with some essential oils. I love using cloth wipes with our cloth diapers! Thanks for posting these solutions, I will try these out as well.
Thanks! I just started with cloth wipes and have been wanting to try a few different wipe solutions!
Thanks for the different options I would love to try and make some of my own solution.
Homemade Solutions for Cloth Wipes is a good post with some good information from this site. Really i was looking forward to read about it. Thanks for this allocation.
I am glad I found this, I have been wondering about the cloth wipes and if you use anything with them. we are still using disposable wipes but want to transition to the cloth ones!
I would love to try thirsties wipes
There are soooooooo many different solutions to use with wipes! I’m planning on using them with my son, but it’s hard to know where to start! Thanks for the info!
Just starting out so this is very helpful!
I use a few tablespoons of baby wash and aloe gel diluted with water . I keep it in a spray bottle. I spray onto my wipes and go.
I will be trying the tea tree and lavender solution Right now I use premade cubes thanks for the great recipes
I use Balance Essential Oil from doTERRA with extra FCO. Works great and my son is over a year and never had a rash problem!
I’m still trying to get used to cloth diapering. I don’t think that making my own diaper solution is top priority quite yet. I’ll file this away for a month or two from now.
