When I first learned I was pregnant, I remember wishing I could fast forward to the third trimester of pregnancy. Let’s pass by the morning sickness, the fatigue, the endless days of worry that I
would miscarry in the first trimester; past the days of looking chunky but not yet pregnant, of tight-waist bands and baggy maternity clothes in the second trimester; and move right to the hugeness of the home-stretch! What were those last few months like? Big belly movements, heartburn and Braxton-Hicks contractions.
When I finally reached my third trimester of pregnancy, I became more and more excited to meet our baby. I was no longer throwing up but I was sore and waddling. These discomforts were made easier by the joy I would feel every time I felt my unborn child kick or move, reminding me exactly how worth it some physical discomfort was. My over-large stomach was so full, I could see elbows, knees, heels and fists rolling and thrusting under my skin. I made sure to make some home videos of the wave-like swells because I knew my daughter would love seeing herself moving in my belly when she was older.
The third-trimester also meant the arrival of a nasty guest: Mr. Heartburn. My stomach was so flattened and elevated in my abdomen from the baby that I could only eat a little at a time. If I ate too much I would feel my stomach contents start to back up into my esophagus and it would burn, baby, burn! Because I was eating less, my weight gain leveled off. It was like having temporary gastric bi-pass surgery. I couldn’t have eaten more even if I had wanted too.
Time seemed to slow down when I finally reached the last few weeks of my pregnancy. I was full-term and I knew I could go into labor at any point. I began to over-analyze every cramp, twinge and Braxton-Hicks contraction, wondering if it could be the beginning of the end. Braxton-Hicks contractions felt like a tightening of my abdominal muscles–they would get rock-hard and my stomach would clamp around the baby, like multiple dress-rehearsals for the final act. At first they were mildly uncomfortable but at the end of my third trimester they started to get painful.
As it turns out, my third trimester of pregnancy didn’t drag on as long as I had anticipated. I went into labor at 38 weeks and 0 days…and gave birth to a healthy, beautiful, baby girl.

Yes, even six months later I still remember that stage. I remember having regular Braxton Hicks every night and waking up still pregnant, until finally one night I knew they were the real thing and I had a baby. Except my third trimester dragged on to 42 weeks–much longer than I had anticipated!
I had heartburn, but really an easy pregnancy. No B-H!
Ugh, I’m in the throes of pregnancy right now and man oh man, do I wish I could fast forward to delivery day.
I’m 37 1/2 weeks pregnant right now and I know exactly how you felt! I’m very thankful that I don’t have heartburn, but I’ve been having tons of braxton hicks. Hopefully I will go a little early like you
I am just started with this process for the 3rd time. I have decided to enjoy every minute of it this time around because it will most likely be our last.
I am due Feb. 23 and I have to say that I am soooo ready to meet this little boy! And yes, heartburn sucks! Every time I eat, I want to eat more. Thanks for sharing
I have a little over a month left, and while part of me loves feeling the kicks the other part wishes this little gymnast would nap more! I swear I must be black and blue inside, it hurts so much!
i had 3 great pregnancy and can’t complain at all. but still i was glad when baby was out, especially with the last pregnancy.
I’m 23 weeks pregnant, and I wish I could stay feeling this way until D-day. I’m feeling good movement now and basically am just exhausted. I can deal with just that for a few more months!
Awww I miss being pregnant
I wish I had enjoyed it more (easy to say now I know) rather than wishing the time away.
I’m 38 weeks and 1 day(and counting!) This pregnancy has been much better than my first, but more challenging because I’m chasing a toddler all day!
I’m trying my hardest to enjoy this pregnancy, but I can’t wait to hold my baby girl in my arms and not feel constant kicks and braxton hicks!
With both of my pregnancies, I didn’t have any contractions other than when labor actually started
blessing or curse idk, I also have long labors 43/26 hours respectively… We’re expecting #3 in April and have been getting out all of our smaller thirsties! And getting our changing Station ready!
I love the serene pregnancy portrait!
